Cultured cafes for watching the world go by

As one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, Edinburgh’s cosmopolitan culture makes it one of the best places to take a pit stop and watch the world go by.  There has never a better time to soak up the city’s famed atmosphere than during the summer festivals - and with an array of venues boasting outdoor space in the thick of the action there is an abundance of venues to choose from.  To help you find the best of the city’s cafe culture we bring you a few of our favourites.

For a break from literary events at the Book Festival why not pull up a pew at wine bar Wighams on the corner of Charlotte Square, or try Ryan’s Bar, which boasts outdoor seating in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle.  The cosy Caffe Nero at House of Fraser is great for a coffee or  bite to eat, while at Liggy’s Cake on William Street you can discover a delightful space which is well known for its freshly baked, stylish cupcakes.

Along eclectic Rose Street there are many spots to take a seat and watch the hustle and bustle – from the Mussel inn for renowned seafood lunches, El Cantina for hearty Mexican dishes or friendly sandwich shop Zea for a sandwich, wrap or tea and cakes.  Nearby the Parisian Cafe Rouge on Frederick Street is ideal for enjoying a glass of wine, while neighbouring tea boutique Eteaket caters to those with a sweet tooth, with a selection of freshly made scones and tray bakes, complemented by their extensive range of herbal teas.

In the East End, for a break from shopping at Harvey Nichols or their famous designer counterparts on Multrees Walk, stop for an authentic Italian coffee at VinCaffe, or head to the Square, a lively cafe just around the corner from comedy club the Stand.  Nearby Broughton Street is also home to several great haunts including The Bakehouse Co, famous Blue Moon Café or speciality coffee bar Artisan Roast.

Over the festival many cafes are also transformed into performance venues – so you never know what you could stumble upon!
