The secret to avoiding party wear blunders is to be prepared. So forget present buying for others, plan ahead and create some serious head turnage with a statement party frock. For some festive indulgence, set the mood with a Basil Mary at The Rutland Hotel then head across the road to House of Fraser, in particular the second floor which now houses FCUK, Ted Baker, Mint Velvet and Coast. Then check into Next for some sequins, ZARA for your designer-inspired ensembles, AllSaints for funky little numbers, Accessorize for statement accessories, Dune for the killer heels and Marks & Spencer for lingerie, to make you feel good inside and out. Refuel at Amicus Apple with a cosmopolitan or two, before stopping off at Laing Boutique for a spot of bling, H&M for a high street bargain, Monsoon for a peek at jewel coloured ensembles and Topshop for some serious on-trend shopping.

Start the day as you mean to go on with a spot of pampering. A cut and blow dry at the Charlie Miller salon on South St Andrew Street will avoid any bad hair days. Get a Champagne Manicure at the Nails Inc bar in Harvey Nichols or check into the new beauty clinic Beyond MediSpa on the second floor. After doing some damage in the beauty hall, recharge the batteries with afternoon tea at the Balmoral’s Bollinger Bar. Served between 1.30pm and 5.30pm, you can devour homemade scones, pastries and sandwiches whilst the harpist plays Christmas carols (from £21 per person). For a shopping spree, Multrees Walk is a one stop strip of designer boutiques offering the best in brand names. Finally, give those Jimmy Choos a rest with antipasti at VinCaffè or the fixed price Christmas menu (two courses from £20) at Harvey Nics.
